The 2010 Contest season has been a bit of a rollercoaster, with both highs and lows for the Band.......click the picture to read more

Yorkshire Area – 6th March

‘A Moorside Suite’ (Holst)

Gustav Holst’s ‘A Moorside Suite’ would be the challenging test piece chosen for the 1st Section bands in 2010. Set in three movements, the test piece would showcase the full band sound and balance, as well as the Band’s soloists.

In the weeks leading up to the Contest, City of Sheffield had the best organisation that has been seen for several years. This was reflected in the high attendance at rehearsals. In fact, the Band had every seat filled!

On the day, with a scoreless David Holling as Musical Director, the Band felt that the performance demonstrated the musicality of the piece. The performance gained positive feedback from many members of the audience, as well as on banding forums.

In the results the two adjudicators placed the Band in 6th position; a disappointing outcome but the Band is united in continuing to work hard with our M.D. to build on the improvements that have been seen over the last 10 months since David took over.

Senior Cup – Spring Festival, Blackpool 15th May

‘Year of the Dragon’ (Philip Sparke)

A disappointing 18th position will see the Band competing in the Senior Trophy in 2011.

Morley Hymn and March Contest – 21st June

‘Ravenswood’ and ‘Colne’

A hot and sunny Sunday saw the Band take part in the annual contest at Morley. Despite limited rehearsal time due to several other concerts in the preceeding weeks, the Band was pleased with their performance of the contest march, Ravenswood, and the Salvation Army hymn, Colne.

The Band was placed 5th (or possibly 4th according to 4br!), and was also the highest placed 1st section band (outside of the prizes).

Meet the Band! Find out which player is featured this month by clicking on the picture….

Bass Trombone – Nick Stokes

Nick first started playing brass instruments at the age of 5 or 6. Initially Nick learned cornet before spending a few years playing tenor horn. After 8 or so years playing trombone, someone finally gave Nick a bass trombone, and he found his true talent!

Over the years, Nick has played for many bands, including:
Welbeck Estates
Creswell Colliery
Shirebrook Miners Welfare
Chapeltown

He joined Stocksbridge (City of Sheffield) in 2006.

Nick recalls his worst banding moment to be his first contest performance, in the Midlands fourth section in 2001. Having played Henry Geehl’s Sinfonietta Pastorale, and come off stage reasonably happy, the band was placed 25th out of 25 bands!

However, Nick has also experienced success in contetsing. Nick was part of the team that saw Stocksbridge become 1st Section Yorkshire Champions in 2007 with The Wayfarer. It was Nick’s first contest win and he recall feeling very nervous as the results were read out! Another happy memory is winning the Senior Trophy at Blackpool on Ballet for Band two months later.

Nick’s banding ambitions include playing at the top section national finals at the Albert Hall or the British Open!

2nd Baritone – Trevor Goodison

Trevor started playing brass instruments in the Salvation Army at the age of 8.

His first contesting brass band was Chapeltown Silver Prize Band which he joined in 1972, aged 17.

Trevor joined City of Sheffield in 1977, then known as Quaker Sutherland Band, and has never left! In fact, Trevor was one of the handful of players who campaigned to keep the Band ‘alive’ in 1997. During his time in the Band, Trevor has proved to be a true Bandsman, playing Solo Horn, Eb Bass, Euphonium, and Baritone. He also holds the position of treasurer in the Band.

Trevor reports his favourite moments of playing in the Band have been famous contest wins – winning the Grand Shield in 1980 & 1984, and coming 2nd in the Yorkshire Area Championship Section in 1991.

Trevor (pictured right) appeared in the Full Monty with the Band

Other highlights include several trips to Sheffield’s twin town, Bochum, in Germany.

Outside the bandroom

City of Sheffield Band prides itself on its friendly bandroom atmosphere and the fact that this extends outside of rehearsals. Below are some of the activities that the band has been involved in over the last year.

Dragon boat racing 2010
A gloriously sunny June Saturday once again saw the Band competing in the annual dragon boat race at Rother Valley Country Park to raise money for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

In an improved result from last year, the team reached the semi-finals and finished 6th overall – the highest placed mixed boat that doesn’t practice pre-race!

Congratulations to everyone who took part!

Christmas Social
December saw the band take a break from carolling at supermarkets to spend an evening at Wortley Hall, where there was a Christmas meal, music, and dancing.

Dragon boat racing 2009
In July, the Band entered the annual dragon boat race at Rother Valley Country Park, raising money in aid of the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. On the day, over £20,000 was raised for the charity.

Whit Friday March Contest
Although the Band was serious about playing well at the contests, it took a lot of good humour to survive 2009’s very wet Whit Friday marches!
